SCOTUS decision Dobbs Since the Republicans have just begun to attack women’s rights, the “end” of entrusting women to third-class citizenship was mistakenly naive. As just one example, Georgia lawmaker Buddy Carter argues that pharmacists should have the right to refuse to prescribe abortion medications.
Carter hated FRC group leader Tony Perkins, saying:
“Some of these medicines are used for good reason, but there is no question about them. People will still be able to get them.
“Even if it is used for arthritis, you can take medicine for arthritis. If it is supposed to be used for that purpose, they are still written and prescribed for them. You will be able to get the medicine that was given.
“Pharmacists must have the right to refuse to fill out a prescription if they are known to be used for abortion and are morally opposed to it.”

Women’s access to these medicines has always been a problem with privacy, health care and equal rights, but it is clearly at the forefront. The federal government has warned pharmacies across the United States that refusing to fill out these prescriptions would violate civil rights law. The government has a hammer to carry out its obligations. Medicare and Medicaid are probably the largest single source of payment to pharmacies, and pharmacies found to violate women’s rights may be disqualified from receiving payments through the system.
Indeed, HHS has issued: warning last week:
“Guidance prohibits pharmacies from discriminating on the basis of race, color, country of origin, gender, age, or disability in programs or activities as recipients of federal financial assistance, including payments for Medicare and Medicaid. This includes the supply of prescription medications. Determines if the prescription medications are suitable for the patient and advises the patient on the prescription medications and how to take them. “
Of course, if Congress controls federal funds this year, just as Congress removed federal funding from organizations that provide abortion services, Congress could change the law on Medicare and Medicaid, a fact like the summit or Carter. Change the law that should be most surely shouted by people.
Interestingly, Congressman Carter himself is a pharmacist and owns a pharmacy in Savannah, Georgia. Congressman “Pro Life” made a lot of money 10 years ago and supplied many opioids to his customers.
