Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a member of the 1/6 Commission, said Republicans and the media, who do not want to say anything inconsistent, are strengthening Trump’s cult.
Congressman Kinzinger said of ABC this week:
Again, I think the most important thing is what the 5 or 10 year history says. Because I can guarantee — well, within about 10 years, I can be as close as possible to guaranteeing that there is no single Trump supporter anywhere in the country. It’s like Nixon. There were many people who supported Nixon until he was absent, and everyone said, “No, no one supported Nixon.”
I think it will happen. But the other thing is this. We live in a media environment and reinforce your media from whatever kind of person you already believe in. And some of these media have the motive of profiting to say nothing that contradicts what Donald Trump is saying. He is essentially a cult leader now, he is the one who can stand up and say whatever he wants, and these media outlets just reinforce it.
So, if you have a parliamentary leader like Kevin McCarthy, frankly, like most Republicans in parliament, they’re lying and abusive, so it’s true to their members. It simply refuses to tell. Those components. But second, you can’t really expect many different results.
The time will come when no one will admit to being a Trump supporter. Future historians try to understand how Trump has ever had support when they swear that everyone they speak did not support Donald Trump.
The word cult is used more casually to describe what happened to the Republicans. See Sarah Palin worship Trump’s testicles as a visible example of cult worship.
As long as Republicans and the conservative media benefit from the cult, nothing will change. One day, both political and financial interests will be depleted and the dynamics that strengthen Trump’s cult will collapse.
